UPSC Civil Services Mains 2017 Sociology Paper and Essential Sociology

Hi friends,

We thank you so much for the tremendous response for the book. And a testimony for it is that the book has ran out of stock within a few months of its release. However, the book is undergoing reprint and shall be available soon.

Another matter of pride for us is that, almost all the questions of Sociology Mains 2017 Paper were from this book and apparently the book passed its first test of UPSC after its publication.

For example, questions like ― Yogendra Singh's idea of Modernization of Tradition, idea of Gandhi and Ambedkar on caste, various theories of social change, cultural and structural views of caste and change in caste, New Social Movements, development related imbalances (development and dependency), causes of low sex ratio in developed states, Islam in India, distinction between family and household, distinction in kinship and family in North and South India, dominant caste, tribes and religion (or tribes and caste and changes in tribal identity), Marxian Historical Materialism as a critique of Hegelian Idealism and so on ― are explained very clearly in the book. These are some of the questions which have to be often researched from multiple sources or are very difficult to be found in standard text books for a satisfactory grasp on them. Apart from them, all the conventional questions that were asked in 2017 Mains Exam are there in the book.

We are extremely happy that the book must have proved very handy to all of you in the exam and we also hope that it will continue to prove useful in future also.

Thanks
Seema and Nitin

    1. Hi,

For current part, you may rely on a good Newspaper, Magazines and your GS preparation. Just try to note down whatever you read as a part of your preparation which sound important from Sociological syllabus point of view.

      Thanks

    1. Hi,

I believe the book is very comprehensive. Still you can read New NCERTs as basic reference. IGNOU graduation level chapterwise notes can also be helpful. Both are available in soft copy online.

      Thanks

  6. Sir,
I bought first edition of the book earlier. What are the parts that are missing as compared to latest edition.
Can you provide the missing content somehow as it won't be feasible to purchase another copy for the edits.

Only one table was missing which is there on the blog of the book www.upsc-sociology.blogspot.in

Apart from that, there are no other changes. Only paper quality has been improved. So, you need not to purchase a fresh copy.

      Thanks

    1. Piyush,

I have not left any stone unturned while writing this book and I believe it covers not only syllabus, but a lot of other topics also. So, remain assured. But I suggest that you read a good sociology dictionary (Panguin/Sage) plus new NCERTs along with noting current events related to syllabus. With that you will be fully armoured for exam.

      Best of luck

  9. Hello Sir. I have these queries.

I have been preparing sociology since last 2 years. This year, prepared a lot from your book. Didnot focus on some of the topics in syllabus like the "Work and economic life" and BAMM, it was there in paper. Didnot clear mains, one of the reasons is perhaps poor marks in optional. not a fault of your book, its very well written.

Sir, i feel i am missing on the way one writes answers in sociology. that sociological lexicon. Second, what about questions like these-

Examine the impact of heritage tourism on urban socio-spatial patterns in India. (20 Marks)

To what extent does nation building depends on strengthening of pluralities in Indian society? (20 Marks)

What is cultural Revivalism ? Give some examples from performing arts , language dissemination and arts crafts in recent times. (20 Marks)

How can one tackle such questions, given that every year upsc asks few such questions which are not directly there in the syllabus. Please elaborate.

And from where to update sociology from current events. for optionals like POl Sc and IR, mostly articles in Newspapers suffice, but for sociology there is very less examples here and there, please put some light.

    Thankyou.

    1. Amrit,

Sad that your journey to Civil Services was cut short. But I am sure that you have learned from your weak areas and are gearing up for the next attempt with full gusto.

The kind of questions that you have mentioned are more of general studies questions and you can answer them using your GS knowledge and a little bit common sense. For example, cultural revivalism is a very common word which we read in so many news papers. Revivial of classical music, use of motifs (like peacock/paisley print) by fashion brands, use of symbols like Aum by youngsters are some examples. In fact, use of Hindu/Muslim cultural symbols by some fringe groups is also a part of cultural revivalism. Similarly, see how Yoga and Sanskrit (language revivalism) is happening across the country. There can be so many similar examples.

Such questions are to be answered by a little innovation of thought and GS knowledge of yours. They are nothing more than what you observe in your surroundings.

      Thanks

    1. Pema,

There are many subjects which you can take as an optional. While selecting one, please go by your interest. Don't get influenced by the opinions of others. If you are well versed in your technical field and the subject is in list of UPSC, you can retain that also. No harm in that.

Once you decide optional, list of books can be suggested.

For GS, there are standard books which are available on alMost every other website. I have also suggested some of them here on this blog.

      Thanks

  15. Nitin Sir/ Seema ma'am,
I have chosen sociology as my optional subject and I have bought ESSENTIAL SOCIOLOGY (last year when it was released). I wanted to know whether this book is exhaustive or do I need to read from other sources (newspaper of course) as well. Also, I'm planning to give 2019 attempt so do I need to buy this book again for next year's preparation as the new edition might have some new information? Do I require coaching for this subject?
Please help me with the queries. I have read a few chapters (Part 2- Indian society) and they provide a good understanding.

    Awaiting your reply.

  18. Dear Sir,

I just wanted to thank you for this book.
It was my first time writing the mains sociology paper last year.
I solely relied on your book(did not even join any coaching, test series, etc.).
I am happy with my mains score of 266 (133, 133).
Unfortunately i was unable to clear mains (missed the cutoff by 5 marks).
Will be appearing with a much better prep this year and will focus more on answer writing and presentation.

    Thanks again for the book.
