My Upcoming Book on Sociology Optional

Hi friends,

When I started my preparation for Sociology, the biggest hurdle that I faced was that - there was no single source for the subject and I had to run from pillar to post to gather the material. Topics were scattered in tens of the books and still I was not able to cover the complete syllabus. To overcome that limitation, I tried to compile the syllabus from numerous books and other academic sources and finally it took shape of a veritable book. Post selection in the UPSC Civil Services Exam, I pondered over if these notes of mine could be put to some other better use and the idea of writing a book came into my mind. After working upon it for almost nine months, the idea finally took material shape and now it gives me immense pleasure to announce that the cover of my book "ESSENTIAL SOCIOLOGY" was recently released by LexisNexis. The book will be available from 30 June 2017 on Amazon and LexisNexis.

Some of the salient features of the book are:

  1. It covers the complete syllabus of both the papers of the Sociology optional.
  2. It has been written in a very concise and easy to understand manner.
  3. Analytical understanding of the topics of Paper 1 and 2 of Sociology for Civil Services Main Exam with updated information till March 2017.
  4. Equipped with around 200 illustrations, diagrams, tables, information boxes, it supplements the text for better and deeper understanding.
  5. Chapter-wise specially designed question bank for self-assessment and for fulfilling present and future needs of the optional exam.
  6. Use of cartoons at the start of each chapter (drawn by author himself) to provide clarity and stimulate thought at the very beginning of each chapter.
  7. Lots of additional information over and above the prescribed syllabus keeping in mind the contemporary trends, dynamic nature of this exam and to make the aspirants capable of answering even the un-anticipated questions.
I hope you will love the book and it shall address all your needs regarding Sociology optional and will ultimately help in scoring good marks in the Civil Services Exam.

It gives me extreme pleasure that the book is finally out and is now available at -

    1. Hi Rahul,

First of all many congratulations to you for thinking about civil services as a career.

Regarding sociology preparation, I would suggest you to please go through the basic NCERTS (new ones) and IGNOU graduation level notes thoroughly. They will cover almost 50-60% of the syllabus.

The key to sociology is to have a clear idea about the various concepts and views of the thinkers. For this, you might need to refer multiple sources. Reading from diverse sources is always helpful in having a clear understanding of concepts.

Always be watchful of some current developments which are related to syllabus and take note of them. Use this information especially in Paper 2.

Finally, always think like a Sociologist. From the perspective of the writers whose books you read.

      Thanks
      Nitin Sangwan

    1. Hi Vijender,

This is one hazard of UPSC that we have to cope up with. Sometimes, despite your best performance, UPSC tend to behave erratically.

I would suggest you to read widely from different sources to have greater clarity of concepts. Do some basic writing practice. Read answers of the other students to have a different perspective. Read your own answers after 15-20 days and you will see them in an altogether different light. This will surely help you.

      Thanks

I will never advise that you should depend on only a single book or source. Have a diverse reading of multiple books to gain a clear perspective. However, you may take any of them as reference.

  20. Sir, prior to learning about your book, i started reading a few books.. I read modernisation of indian tradition and social change in india by yogendra singh.. I thought they are excellent.. I also planned to read book on cultural change and social stratification by yogendra singh... But i am in doubt whether i am getting greedy and wanting to read a lot of books on sociology because i want to do exam specific readings only now... Can you guide on which books by which writer are more exam centric..??also have you used these books while writing your book?? I am not sure if the approach i am following is right but i found the subject too diverse to find answers to questions that upsc has asked previously from topics in one single book...

    1. Hi Utkarsh,

Reading more never harms, but provided you have all the time in this world. So, utilize your time judiciously. Some of the books by Indian authors that you mentioned are good but you will find a very few things out of these relevant from exam point of view especially when it comes to paper 2. But nevertheless, it is still advisable that you read more and more.

I have suggested some indispensable books in one of my posts on this blog.

While preparing the above book, I came across a few reasonably good books which I have listed here http://upsc-sociology.blogspot.in/?m=1

But again, there is no need to read each and every book. I have consulted more than 30 books before writing this books and I hope it will serve the purpose. But this is not a recommendation. Use your discrwtion before you pick my or any of the books that I have listed on my blogs.

      Thanks

  26. sir first of all very grateful for making out a book on sociology. sir please could u throw some light on words being used in cse mains GS and Sociology optional like comment, examine, critically examine, analyse, critically analyse, elucidate, evaluate, iilustarte, contrast, distingiush etc. please explain these words and what could be the answer for each word mentioned herein. thankyou

    1. Hi,

My suggestion is don't read too much between the lines regarding these words. Just go by their dictionary meaning. However, make it sure that you don't confuse between the phrases like - "critally analyse" and "write a critic". While the former wants you to write all the critical points (both positive and negative), the latter requires primarily only a criticism. In comment, you may also offer your opinion (but of course based on facts) and so on.

But my advise will be not to be obsessed with these words. Write to the best of your knowledge and understanding.

Writing the meaning of all these words is a needless exercise as I think every well read person knows the meaning of all these terms or can look them up in a dictionary.

      Thanks

  27. Dear Sir,
If I start reading from scratch with your book and follow it religiously along with current affairs, will it be sufficient for sociology syllabus and to get a good score in it? I mean if I dont refer any other book at all?

    1. Hi,

If you are appearing for this year's mains, then you may take this chance, else I will suggest you to read widely. I don't claim that my book is a sure shot success formula. It is just based on my extensive experience of this exam and numerous resources that I referred to, but like all other books, this one will also have its own shortcomings. Nonetheless, I hope you will find it worth reading.

Because sir I see sociology previous year paper their is question 10 and 20 markers and word limit 150 to 300 so I think not run behind multiple source and restricted self only one resource for optional and is that your book because book cover entire syllabus of sociology so sir it's good for me if I only follow one source with multiple revision

I have answered this question before also and reiterate again that unless you are really short on time, you should read talwaar a few of standard books. It will deepen your understanding. Though it is true that now a days only short questions are asked. In my opinion, a well read aspirant always has better chances over others.

    1. Shubham, any good dictionary of sociology (Penguin, Sage etc), along with new NCERTs or IGNOU BA notes shall be sufficient. If you still have time, go through Haralambos (blue jacket). I don't think you need to go through many sources as only short questions are asked in exam now a days.
